Geschichte der Jesuiten in den Ländern deutscher Zunge im XVI. Jahrhundert

Bernhard Duhr, a Jesuit historian, authored this comprehensive study to document the establishment and activities of the Society of Jesus in German-speaking territories during the sixteenth century. Published in the early twentieth century, the work was conceived as a rigorous academic response to the historiography of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, aiming to provide an internal, archival-based perspective on the growth of the Jesuit order.

The research was grounded in extensive engagement with primary Jesuit records and administrative documents, reflecting the meticulous methodology characteristic of German historical scholarship of the era. The text was widely received by ecclesiastical and academic historians as a definitive, albeit partial, reference for understanding the institutional expansion and educational influence of the order, serving as a foundational pillar for subsequent Jesuit historical studies.
