Where it came from
Ghost Stories, known in Japan as Gakkou no Kaidan, originated as a series of books written by Tōru Tsunemitsu before being adapted into a popular anime series in 2000. The franchise centers on a group of students who explore an abandoned schoolhouse and encounter various urban legends and spirits. The game associated with this series was developed to capitalize on the success of the anime's unique blend of horror, mystery, and humor, often featuring the iconic spirits and challenges depicted in the source material.
The design of the game draws heavily from the established aesthetic of the anime, utilizing the distinct character designs and the eerie, atmospheric visual style that defined the series. It was intended for fans who wanted to engage with the folklore-inspired narrative in a participatory format. While the anime gained a cult following globally due to its unconventional and irreverent localization in certain markets, the tie-in games remain largely appreciated by collectors for their commitment to the visual identity of the original production.
