Where it came from
Gi(a)rlish Number originated as a multi-media project spearheaded by author Wataru Watari, who is best known for the popular light novel series Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. The series was designed to offer a cynical, behind-the-scenes look at the contemporary anime industry, focusing on the professional and personal struggles of a voice actress named Chitose Karasuma. By contrasting the superficial glitter of the entertainment world with the harsh realities of talent management and production deadlines, Watari sought to provide a satirical commentary on the medium he helped define.
The character designs were illustrated by QP:flapper, an artist duo known for their soft, appealing aesthetic that serves as a deliberate juxtaposition to the sharp, occasionally biting tone of the narrative. This visual choice emphasizes the disconnect between the idolized public image of voice actresses and the complex, often messy reality of their day-to-day lives. Upon its release in 2016, the series was noted for its unconventional protagonist and its willingness to criticize the very industry that produced it, garnering a dedicated following among fans of self-aware, industry-focused storytelling.
