Gigantis

Gigantis is a science fiction manga series written by Yoichi Komori with illustrations by Takumi Kobayashi. The narrative functions as a reinterpretation of the classic Kaiju genre, drawing heavy inspiration from the original 1955 film Godzilla Raids Again, which was released under the title Gigantis, the Fire Monster in the United States. The series explores the biological and societal implications of a prehistoric monster reappearing in the modern world, leaning into a darker, more realistic tone than many of its predecessors.

The collaboration between Komori and Kobayashi was designed to bridge the gap between traditional creature features and contemporary thriller storytelling. By focusing on scientific detail and the logistical horror of a monster outbreak, the authors aimed to modernize the threat for a new generation of readers. The series was serialized in the magazine Evening, receiving moderate critical attention for its gritty atmosphere and the detailed creature designs that pay homage to early Japanese special effects cinema.
