Gleanings from the Harvest-Fields of Literature: A Melange of Excerpta

Published in the late 19th century, Gleanings from the Harvest-Fields of Literature was compiled by Charles Carroll Bombaugh, a physician and editor with an avid interest in curiosities of language and history. The collection was designed as a literary miscellany, intending to provide readers with a structured yet eclectic selection of anecdotes, oddities, and historical trivia that might otherwise be scattered across obscure texts. It served the Victorian appetite for encyclopedic knowledge and self-improvement through diverse, bite-sized intellectual pursuits.

The work is noted for its organizational approach to information, categorizing bits of knowledge into thematic fields to make the vast array of historical and linguistic excerpts accessible to the general public. Bombaugh’s intent was to create a bridge between academic research and parlor-room conversation. It was received as a useful, if dense, resource for those interested in the eccentricities of literature and history, cementing its place as a classic example of the 19th-century compilation genre.
