Gleanings from the Harvest-Fields of Literature: A Melange of Excerpta

First published in the late 19th century, Gleanings from the Harvest-Fields of Literature was compiled by Charles C. Bombaugh as a comprehensive anthology of curiosities, anecdotes, and literary oddities. During an era when parlor games and intellectual pastimes were highly valued in domestic circles, Bombaugh sought to curate a vast repository of information that spanned history, poetry, and scientific trivia. His objective was to provide a portable source of edification and amusement, organizing fragmented knowledge into a cohesive volume for the inquisitive general reader.

The editorial philosophy behind the collection favored the eclectic over the systematic, reflecting the Victorian penchant for encyclopedic knowledge and scrapbooking. Bombaugh’s work was received as a useful reference tool for writers and public speakers, functioning as a precursor to modern miscellanies. The design focuses on accessibility and density, prioritizing a wide breadth of subject matter to ensure that the reader would find something of interest on nearly every page, cementing its status as a staple of library collections for those interested in historical literary ephemera.
