Where it came from
Global Comics: The Basics, authored by Frederick Luis Aldama and published by Routledge, was conceived as a foundational academic resource aimed at expanding the study of comics beyond the traditional Anglo-American canon. It emerged from a growing scholarly demand to treat global graphic narratives with the same rigor as literature, addressing the complex interplay between visual storytelling and cultural identity across diverse regions.
Aldama, a prominent scholar in Latino and comics studies, designed this volume as an accessible entry point for students and general readers alike. The book explores the aesthetics, histories, and sociological impact of comics produced in Latin America, Asia, Europe, and Africa. It was well-received by academic communities for its systematic approach to deconstructing the formal elements of the medium while situating them within their respective sociopolitical contexts.
