Goemon Ishikawa XIII

Goemon Ishikawa XIII was created by the manga artist Kazuhiko Kato, known by his pen name Monkey Punch, as a central member of the cast for the manga series Lupin III, which first appeared in Weekly Manga Action in 1967. As a descendant of the legendary thief Ishikawa Goemon, the character was conceived as a stoic, traditionalist foil to the more chaotic and modern sensibilities of Arsène Lupin III. His design, characterized by his signature kimono and the legendary sword Zantetsuken, reflects a deliberate blend of historical samurai tropes with the swinging sixties aesthetic that defined the series.

The character's aesthetic was heavily influenced by the genre-bending nature of the manga, which synthesized elements of spy thrillers, slapstick comedy, and noir. Monkey Punch intentionally crafted Goemon as a man out of time, creating a recurring dynamic where the character's rigid code of honor often clashed with the absurdity of the criminal underworld. The design has remained remarkably consistent across decades of adaptations, cementing Goemon's status as an iconic figure in anime and manga history, widely recognized for his unwavering loyalty and his ability to cut through nearly any obstacle with his blade.
