Where it came from
Gokushufudou, known in English as The Way of the Househusband, debuted in 2018 in the online manga magazine Kurage Bunch. Created by Oono Kousuke, the series originated as a comedic subversion of the yakuza genre, centering on Tatsu, a legendary former underworld boss who retires from crime to become a dedicated, apron-wearing househusband. The contrast between Tatsu’s intimidating physical presence and his meticulous commitment to domestic chores quickly resonated with readers, leading to significant critical success and multiple award nominations.
Oono Kousuke’s design style is defined by sharp, cinematic paneling that leans into the visual tropes of gritty action manga, which he then intentionally juxtaposes with mundane activities like grocery shopping or participating in community yoga. This artistic choice highlights the absurdity of Tatsu's transition, making the comedy feel grounded through the very aesthetic of a serious crime thriller. The series has been widely praised for its consistent humor and unique approach to character development, eventually spawning an anime adaptation and a live-action television drama.
