Where it came from
Great Pretender is a manga adaptation of the high-stakes con artist anime series of the same name, which premiered in 2020. Produced by Wit Studio and written by Ryouta Kosawa—a celebrated screenwriter known for his work on the series Legal High—the project was developed to bring a vibrant, global aesthetic to the heist genre. The manga iteration serves as a companion piece that captures the show’s distinct visual identity, defined by its bold, saturated color palettes and character designs provided by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto.
The narrative follows Edamame, a self-proclaimed greatest con man in Japan, who finds himself entangled in elaborate international schemes orchestrated by the charismatic Laurent Thierry. The series was well-received by audiences for its exploration of morality, identity, and the thrill of the grift, set against iconic backdrops like Los Angeles, Singapore, and London. The manga adaptation preserves the fast-paced, episodic nature of the original scripts, translating the frenetic energy of the animation into sequential art panels.
