Grimm's fairy tales, chosen from the collection by the brothers Grimm, with illustr. by A. Rackham. (Expurgated ed.).

First published in the early 20th century, this edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales serves as a notable intersection between the folklore preservation work of the Brothers Grimm and the distinct aesthetic of Arthur Rackham. Rackham, a leading figure in the golden age of British book illustration, was commissioned to provide visuals that would soften the occasionally grim nature of the original German texts. His watercolors, characterized by intricate pen-and-ink detailing and earthy, moody palettes, were designed to capture the whimsical yet shadowy essence of the stories for a growing audience of young readers.

This particular expurgated edition was curated to ensure the stories were appropriate for a Victorian and Edwardian family readership, stripping away some of the more visceral or disturbing elements found in the 1812 Kinder- und Hausmärchen. The design choices, from the typography to the placement of the plates, reflect the high production standards of the period. Received with widespread critical acclaim, Rackham’s interpretations became the definitive visual language for these tales, influencing generations of illustrators and cementing the book as a staple of early 20th-century library and home collections.
