Where it came from
Handa-kun is a comedic spin-off manga series authored by Satsuki Yoshino, serving as a prequel to her earlier work, Barakamon. It was serialized in Monthly Shonen Gangan from 2013 to 2016. While Barakamon focuses on the mature development of calligrapher Seishuu Handa, this series takes a satirical look at his high school years, exploring the humorous misunderstanding where Handa erroneously believes he is universally disliked by his peers, despite being a popular school idol.
The artistic style maintains Yoshino’s characteristic clean lines and expressive character designs, though it leans heavily into slapstick and situational comedy compared to the slice-of-life tone of its predecessor. The series was well-received for its meta-commentary on the high school hierarchy and its subversion of the typical 'cool guy' manga trope. Its success led to a television anime adaptation produced by Diomedea, which premiered in 2016.
