Harmony

Harmony is a science fiction novel originally published in 2008 by the Japanese author Project Itoh, the pen name of Satoshi Itō. The narrative presents a chilling vision of a post-catastrophic future where the world is governed by a totalitarian system of health and social harmony, enforced through advanced biotechnology and nanotechnology. Itoh conceived the work as a philosophical inquiry into the nature of consciousness and the ethics of a society that has successfully eliminated suffering at the cost of individual autonomy.

The novel is renowned for its clinical, detached prose style, which mirrors the sterile world it depicts. Itoh, who wrote the manuscript while battling the cancer that would eventually claim his life, imbued the text with a profound meditation on death and the human condition.
