Where it came from
Hatsu Haru, or 'Spring is Coming,' is a shōjo manga series created by mangaka Fujisawa Shizuki. It was serialized in the monthly magazine Bessatsu Margaret from 2015 to 2018. The series follows the high school life of Takanashi Riko, a girl who prides herself on being straightforward and tomboyish, and her evolving relationship with her peers, particularly the popular and somewhat arrogant Ichinose Kai. The narrative explores typical shōjo themes of adolescent romance, misunderstandings, and personal growth during the transition into young adulthood.
Fujisawa Shizuki’s design and illustrative style for Hatsu Haru are characterized by clean, expressive character lines and a focus on the emotional stakes of the school setting. Upon its release, the series was well-received within the shōjo community for its charming take on the 'enemies-to-lovers' trope and its balanced pacing. The series effectively captures the aesthetic sensibilities of modern school-life manga, leaning into a relatable atmosphere that helped it sustain a loyal readership throughout its three-year run.
