Herinneringen van een dommen jongen

Herinneringen van een dommen jongen, published in 1904, represents an early work in the literary career of the Dutch novelist Arthur van Schendel. Written during a period when the author was experimenting with romanticized depictions of the past, the novel reflects the stylistic influences of the Dutch literary movement known as the Tachtigers, characterized by a focus on individual experience and aesthetic refinement.

The work is noted for its evocative, somewhat melancholic narrative voice, which was a hallmark of Van Schendel’s prose style at the time. While not as widely discussed in his later canon as his masterworks like Een zwerver verliefd, it remains a significant touchstone for scholars studying his development as a stylist and his integration of late 19th-century sensibilities into early 20th-century Dutch literature.
