High School DxD originated as a light novel series written by Ichiei Ishibumi and illustrated by Miyama-Zero, first published in 2008 by Fujimi Shobo under their Fantasia Bunko imprint. The series emerged during a period of high popularity for the urban fantasy and harem genres in Japanese light literature, blending supernatural action with comedic tropes. Ishibumi crafted the narrative to focus on the mythological struggle between angels, devils, and fallen angels, centered on the protagonist Issei Hyoudou.
