History of the Reign of the Emperor Charles the V

First published in 1769, William Robertson’s History of the Reign of the Emperor Charles the V served as a landmark work in eighteenth-century historiography. Robertson, a leading figure of the Scottish Enlightenment, sought to provide a comprehensive narrative of the complex geopolitical shifts in Europe during the sixteenth century. The work was celebrated for its intellectual rigor and its innovative introductory volume, which provided a structural analysis of the progress of society from the fall of the Roman Empire to the rise of the sixteenth-century nation-state.

The design of the work reflected the scholarly standards of the era, frequently printed in multi-volume quarto editions that emphasized the gravity of the subject matter. Robertson’s approach was influential among his contemporaries for its reliance on primary documents and its focus on the 'philosophical history' style, which looked beyond mere chronicles to identify the systemic causes of historical change. The volumes were widely read across Europe and the American colonies, establishing Robertson as one of the most prominent historians of his time.
