The series is a loose, inventive adaptation of the classic 16th-century Chinese novel Fengshen Yanyi, reimagined through a lens of shonen action and science fantasy. Fujisaki sought to blend traditional mythology with futuristic motifs, resulting in a distinctively stylized aesthetic that differentiated the work from his peers in the late nineties.
The narrative follows the young protagonist Taikoubou as he navigates a world filled with gods, immortals, and humans caught in the machinations of the Daji-controlled Shang dynasty. Fujisaki’s character designs are noted for their lean, stylized anatomy and intricate, eccentric costume choices. Upon its release, the series earned a dedicated following for its cerebral approach to the genre and its unconventional visual direction, eventually leading to a complete run of 23 tankobon volumes and multiple adaptations in other media.
