I Was the Male Lead's Ex

I Was the Male Lead's Ex is a prominent title within the South Korean web novel and webtoon genre known as 'isekai' or 'transmigration' romance. It follows the narrative tradition of female protagonists who find themselves transported into the world of a story they previously read, often tasked with navigating complex social dynamics and romantic tropes to secure a better fate than their character's original trajectory. The series was authored by Bae Hee Jin, who utilized the familiar framework of Regency-inspired fantasy tropes to subvert reader expectations regarding character agency and destiny.

The visual and narrative design of the work adheres to the high-production aesthetic of modern Manhwa, characterized by detailed character designs and ornate period-inspired costuming. As part of the rapidly growing digital publishing ecosystem in South Korea, the work gained international traction through localized web-reading platforms. It is generally recognized by its audience for its focus on character-driven dialogue and the strategic maneuvering of the protagonist, which helped it find a solid footing among readers of contemporary romantic fantasy literature.
