Iganoko Kabamaru

Iganoko Kabamaru was written and illustrated by Yu Azuki, serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1979 to 1983. The series follows the titular Kabamaru, a young, gluttonous ninja raised in the mountains who travels to Tokyo to attend a prestigious private school. Its creation emerged during a period where comedic, fish-out-of-water tropes were becoming increasingly popular within the shonen demographic, blending traditional ninja motifs with slapstick humor and school-life dynamics.

The character design reflects the transition of manga aesthetics in the late 1970s, prioritizing expressive, exaggerated movements to emphasize Kabamaru’s boundless appetite and naive demeanor. Upon its release, the series gained enough traction to warrant a 24-episode anime adaptation produced by Group TAC in 1983.
