Where it came from
Igijeok Yeonae-ron, translated as Selfish Love Theory, emerged from the vibrant landscape of contemporary Korean webtoons and manhwa. Created by author and artist Gyogyo Park, the work serves as a character-driven romantic drama, focusing on the intricate and often flawed interpersonal dynamics of its protagonists. The narrative reflects the popular trend in modern manhwa of blending emotional realism with stylistic, clean-lined character designs that prioritize expressive facial reactions and internal monologue.
The series is noted for its exploration of possessive affection and the psychological tension inherent in complex relationships. Gyogyo Park’s approach to the genre emphasizes the aesthetic sensibilities of the digital comics medium, utilizing a polished color palette and rhythmic panel pacing to engage readers. Upon its serialization, the series garnered attention for its departure from traditional romance tropes, drawing a dedicated audience that values its nuanced, albeit sometimes divisive, portrayal of selfish love.
