Where it came from
This volume presents J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, the foundational 1906 narrative that first introduced Peter Pan to the public. Originally conceived as a subset of chapters from Barrie's earlier novel The Little White Bird, the text was extracted and expanded to stand alone as a mythic origin story for the character. The work is deeply rooted in the Edwardian fascination with childhood innocence and the melancholy of the natural world.
The historical significance of this specific edition is inextricably linked to the iconic illustrations by Arthur Rackham. Commissioned for the 1906 Hodder & Stoughton edition, Rackham's ethereal, ink-and-watercolor plates were instrumental in shaping the visual identity of the Peter Pan legend. His whimsical, shadowy style was widely praised at the time for perfectly capturing the dual nature of Barrie’s narrative, blending the charm of fairy lore with an underlying, haunting sense of solitude.
