Where it came from
Published in the late 19th century, this volume serves as a comprehensive visual and narrative chronicle of Bavarian history. It was produced during a period of rising German nationalism and cultural pride, aiming to consolidate the historical identity of the Kingdom of Bavaria by integrating historical text with the artistic prestige of the Königliche Nationalgalerie in Munich.
The book is notable for its extensive use of woodcut engravings, which were commissioned to reproduce the gallery's collection alongside original illustrations. Mathieu Schwann curated this work to provide an accessible yet scholarly overview for a public increasingly interested in art history and regional heritage. Its reception was largely positive among contemporaries who valued the marriage of rigorous historical narration with the high-quality graphic arts characteristic of German publishing houses of the era.
