Isekai Shokudou, known in English as Restaurant to Another World, began as a web novel serialized by Inuzuka Junpei on the user-generated content site Shousetsuka ni Narou in 2013. The story revolves around a modest Western-style restaurant in Tokyo that opens a mystical portal to a fantasy world every Saturday, serving unique dishes to a diverse cast of magical creatures and adventurers. Its gentle, slice-of-life approach to the isekai genre garnered significant popularity, leading to its acquisition and publication as a light novel series by Shufunotomo starting in 2015, featuring illustrations by Enami Katsumi.

The character designs and aesthetic world-building were solidified through the print publication, which emphasized the comfort of culinary tradition amidst fantastical settings. The series was well-received for its cozy atmosphere and low-stakes storytelling, which stood in contrast to the high-action tropes typical of the genre. Following its success, the work was adapted into a manga series by Takaaki Kugatsu and eventually an anime adaptation, both of which helped cement the restaurant itself, the 'Youshoku no Nekoya,' as an iconic, inviting space within contemporary light novel culture.
