Where it came from
The Jahrbuch der Goethe-Gesellschaft was established by the Goethe-Gesellschaft in Weimar, an organization founded in 1885 to preserve and study the legacy of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The yearbook series emerged as the primary scholarly organ for the society, created to provide a dedicated space for the publication of new research, archival discoveries, and detailed examinations of Goethe’s life and works within the cultural context of German Classicism.
The editorial direction of the series has historically been guided by prominent Germanists and historians, reflecting the rigorous academic standards of the Weimar-based society. Its design typically emphasizes a conservative, scholarly aesthetic, prioritizing legibility and the archival nature of the contents. Over the decades, it has been received by the international literary community as a definitive source for Goethe scholarship, serving as a vital bridge between the historical archives in Weimar and researchers globally.
