Where it came from
Jiangshi X is a supernatural shonen manga series written and illustrated by Norihiko Kurazono, originally serialized in the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine starting in 2023. The narrative draws heavily from Chinese folklore, specifically the legend of the jiangshi, or hopping corpse, while blending these traditional elements with modern action-oriented fantasy tropes. Kurazono designed the series to focus on the dynamic between young disciples and the undead forces they must confront, emphasizing a distinct aesthetic that balances dark folklore with the high-energy sensibilities typical of contemporary manga.
The reception of the series reflects the competitive nature of the shonen genre, as Kurazono aimed to carve out a unique space using motifs often underrepresented in mainstream jump titles. By integrating martial arts with Taoist-inspired magic systems, the work sought to offer a fresh perspective on horror-adjacent action. Although it faced the rigorous editorial pressures inherent in weekly serialization, the collected volumes serve as a definitive record of Kurazono's specific artistic vision and his attempt to modernize the classic jiangshi mythos for a global audience.
