Where it came from
Jiangshi X originated as a one-shot manga published in Weekly Shonen Jump, serving as a conceptual precursor to the serialized version. Created by Kurazono Norihiko, this iteration was designed to test the viability of a dark fantasy premise centered on Taoist-inspired necromancy and martial arts. It emerged during a period where Shonen Jump was actively scouting for unique genre-blending titles that could offer a departure from standard battle manga tropes.
The aesthetic of the pre-serialization draft focused on gritty, atmospheric character designs, emphasizing the contrast between the traditional attire of jiangshi folklore and modern, stylized action panels. Kurazono aimed to capture a sense of dread and high-stakes kinetic energy, establishing a visual language that defined the series' identity. Following its reception, the work provided the foundational structure for the expanded world-building and character dynamics found in the eventual full-length series.
