Journey to the West: The Legend of the Monkey Kings - Western Regions

Journey to the West: The Legend of the Monkey Kings - Western Regions is a graphic adaptation by the renowned manga artist Morohoshi Daijirou, who is celebrated for his unique ability to weave folklore, mythology, and eerie surrealism into his work. Drawing from the classic 16th-century Chinese novel by Wu Cheng'en, Morohoshi reinterprets the episodic journey of the monk Xuanzang and his supernatural disciples with his signature dense, textured art style that emphasizes the mystical and often unsettling nature of the protagonists' travels.

Morohoshi's interpretation emerged from a long-standing interest in ancient Asian legends and the intersection of religious history and myth. Rather than a strictly traditional retelling, his design choices favor atmospheric world-building and character designs that feel grounded in a primal, ancient sensibility. His work on this volume is widely regarded by critics and scholars of manga as a significant contribution to the genre, praised for its intellectual depth and its departure from more sanitized, mainstream depictions of the Monkey King.
