Where it came from
Journey to the World Sword, created by the Chinese cartoonist Shituci, emerged within the burgeoning landscape of digital manhua. The series reflects the author's signature blend of surreal fantasy and grounded, character-driven storytelling, utilizing a minimalist art style that contrasts sharply with the intricate, high-fantasy settings typical of the genre.
The work was developed during a period of rapid evolution for online comic platforms in China, where short-form, episodic narratives found significant popularity. Shituci intended the series to explore themes of displacement and identity through the lens of a wandering protagonist. It was well-received by readers for its deadpan humor and the unique, often melancholic atmosphere that defines its world-building.
