Juukou B-Fighter

Juukou B-Fighter, or Heavy Shell B-Fighter, was produced by Toei Company as the 14th entry in the long-running Metal Hero Series, debuting in Japan in 1995. The series was created by Saburo Yatsude, a collective pseudonym for Toei's production staff, and was intended to move the franchise toward a more organic, insect-inspired aesthetic. This pivot marked a departure from the purely mechanical designs of its predecessors, aiming to integrate themes of environmental conservation and the interconnectedness of nature with the traditional tokusatsu action format.

The character designs for the series, featuring armor that mimics the exoskeleton of beetles and other insects, were influenced by the contemporary success of biological motifs in fantasy media. Critically, the series was well-received for its ambitious production values and its distinct visual departure from the earlier Space Sheriff era. It eventually served as the basis for the first season of the American adaptation Beetleborgs, though the original Japanese volume remains distinct for its earnest environmental narrative and the specific stylistic choices of its practical suit design.
