Where it came from
Juunikyuu de Tsukamaete, titled in English as Catch Me in the Twelve Zodiacs, was authored by Natsumi Andou and serialized in the manga magazine Nakayoshi during the late 1990s. The series emerged from a period of high popularity for shoujo fantasy manga, utilizing a premise centered on the Chinese zodiac to drive its narrative. It follows a young protagonist tasked with collecting the spirits of the zodiac animals, a classic trope of the genre designed to appeal to middle-school readers through a blend of magical girl aesthetics and romantic tension.
Andou's design work for this series emphasizes the clean, expressive character lines that defined late-90s shoujo manga. The illustrations focus on creating distinct personalities for each zodiac character, reflecting the varied archetypes requested by the publication's target demographic. Upon release, the volume collected the initial chapters of the run, providing a foundation for the series' moderate but dedicated following within the competitive landscape of the era's children's comics.
