Where it came from
Kaidan is a seminal work by Takahashi Yousuke, a master of Japanese horror manga known for his unique, surreal, and often unsettling aesthetic. Emerging from the vibrant and experimental manga scene of the 1970s and 1980s, the series draws heavily from traditional Japanese folklore and ghost stories, reinterpreting classic supernatural motifs through Takahashi's distinctively eerie, fluid artistic lens.
The design of Kaidan is characterized by its evocative, sometimes grotesque imagery and a moody atmospheric quality that prioritizes psychological dread over conventional jump-scares. Takahashi sought to capture the uncanny nature of the original kaidan oral traditions, translating them into a visual format that challenges the reader's perception of reality. The work is widely regarded by critics for its influential contribution to the 'horror manga' genre, cementing Takahashi's reputation as a key figure in modern dark fantasy.
