Where it came from
Kaidan Tochuu no Big Noise, authored by Osamu Koshigaya and published in 2011, is a lighthearted mystery novel that blends elements of supernatural folklore with the coming-of-age narrative common to Koshigaya’s body of work. The story follows a high school student who finds himself inadvertently acting as a medium, tasked with resolving the unfinished business of local spirits, all while attempting to navigate the complexities of teenage life and his involvement in a rock band.
The novel reflects Koshigaya’s signature prose style, which often emphasizes atmospheric storytelling and grounded, relatable character dynamics rather than traditional horror tropes. Following its release, the work was noted for its balance of humor and melancholy, finding a stable audience among readers of Japanese light novels who appreciate stories centered on community, music, and gentle, humanistic supernatural encounters.
