Where it came from
Kaitou Alexandrite is a shoujo manga series penned by Akino Matsuri, a mangaka celebrated for her atmospheric storytelling and blend of fantasy with mystery. Serialized during the early 1990s, the work emerged during a period when the 'kaitou' or phantom thief archetype was a staple of Japanese shoujo media, serving as a romanticized counterpoint to traditional investigative narratives.
The series follows the exploits of a sophisticated thief, utilizing a design aesthetic consistent with the ornate, flowing illustration styles characteristic of Matsuri's broader body of work. While the series maintains a niche following compared to her later, more globally recognized projects like Pet Shop of Horrors, it remains a notable example of the stylistic evolution of the magical thief genre within the nineties manga landscape.
