Kamakura Bakeneko Club

The Kamakura Bakeneko Club series represents a nuanced exploration of supernatural folklore intertwined with the mundane realities of coastal living in Kamakura. Created by the acclaimed mangaka Igarashi Daisuke, the work was developed to capture the atmosphere of the region, where the historical significance of the area meets the modern eccentricity of its inhabitants. Daisuke utilized his signature detailed, organic linework to ground the presence of the bakeneko, or shape-shifting cats, within the daily lives of the protagonists, framing the mystical elements as a natural extension of the environment.

Upon its release, the series was received as a contemplative entry in the seinen genre, noted for its rhythmic pacing and atmospheric tension. Igarashi intended to move away from traditional horror tropes, instead focusing on a symbiotic, if occasionally unsettling, relationship between humans and local spirits. The work is widely regarded by critics as a masterclass in visual storytelling, showcasing the artist's ability to render complex emotions through subtle shifts in character expressions and environmental detail.
