Where it came from
Saru is a singular manga volume by Igarashi Daisuke, originally serialized in the monthly seinen magazine Afternoon between 2009 and 2010. The narrative is a complex, multi-layered exploration of time, mythology, and the interconnectedness of human history, centered on a series of mysterious disappearances that bridge the gap between ancient folklore and modern reality. It emerged during a period of peak critical recognition for Igarashi, following the success of his acclaimed series Children of the Sea.
Known for his meticulous, organic pen-and-ink style, Igarashi designed Saru to evoke a sense of deep, cosmic mystery, often utilizing dense hatching and surreal, fluid imagery that challenges traditional manga pacing. The work was received as a sophisticated departure from mainstream genre conventions, lauded by critics for its intellectual ambition and its ability to weave disparate historical threads into a cohesive, unsettling vision of humanity's place within the timeline of the natural world.
