Kami-sama no Memo-chou

Kami-sama no Memo-chou, or Heaven's Memo Pad, began as a light novel series written by Hikaru Sugii with illustrations by Mel Kishida, first published in 2007. The narrative centers on Alice, a hikikomori genius detective who manages a network of 'NEET' investigators to solve crimes from the comfort of her bedroom. The series emerged during a period of rising interest in mystery-themed light novels that combined character-driven drama with the subculture of social withdrawal, aiming to contrast the gritty reality of urban crime with the insular, idiosyncratic world of its protagonists.

Mel Kishida’s character designs are central to the series' identity, characterized by delicate linework and a muted, atmospheric color palette that emphasizes Alice’s fragility and intellectual intensity. The series was well-received for its balanced tone, shifting between lighthearted interactions and darker, more serious thematic elements involving social isolation and trauma. Its success prompted a 2011 anime adaptation by J.C. Staff, which further solidified the series' aesthetic and helped bring its melancholy, reflective style to a wider international audience.
