Where it came from
The Kizewashi Zekamashi doujinshi emerged from the vibrant and prolific fan-creator scene surrounding Kantai Collection, a Japanese web-browser game that anthropomorphizes historical warships as 'kanmusu' or fleet girls. Created by the artist abua, this work centers on Shimakaze, the character affectionately nicknamed 'Zekamashi' by the fandom due to a misreading of her name in early promotional art. The volume reflects the doujinshi subculture’s penchant for expanding upon character designs and personality quirks established in the original game, often adding humorous or stylistic interpretations that official media does not explore.
Abua is recognized within the Kantai Collection circle for a distinctive art style that leans into the expressive potential of character-focused illustrations. This work serves as an exploration of the character’s design, typical of artist-led collections that curate specific motifs—in this case, the interplay between the ship girl’s iconic bunny-eared aesthetic and her role as a high-speed destroyer. It was produced for distribution at doujin events such as Comiket, where such independent publications serve as a primary medium for fans to share creative interpretations of established intellectual properties.
