Kigurumi-kun

Kigurumi-kun is a whimsical manga series created by the artist Nmura, centered on the character of the same name—a mysterious entity who inhabits various animal-themed costumes. The work emerged from the niche world of late 2000s Japanese character-driven manga, a genre that prioritizes expressive, minimalist visual gags and a surreal, deadpan sense of humor. The series is defined by its episodic nature, utilizing the simple premise of a character in a mascot suit to explore mundane daily life through a lens of absurdism.

Nmura’s artistic style for the volume is characterized by clean, deceptively simple linework that emphasizes the character's static, unreadable mask against the backdrop of highly detailed, often chaotic human environments. The design choice to keep the titular character's facial expression perpetually fixed in a hollow stare served as a stylistic anchor, highlighting the irony between his physical appearance and the increasingly strange social situations he navigates. Upon its release, it was received as a cult curiosity, appreciated by fans of avant-garde gag manga for its commitment to a bizarre and singular aesthetic.
