Kiichi!!

Kiichi!! is a provocative seinen manga series written and illustrated by Hideki Arai, first serialized in Kodansha's Afternoon magazine starting in 2001. The narrative centers on Kiichi, a young boy with an unusually strong sense of justice and social awareness, who navigates a world filled with adult hypocrisy and systemic inequality. Arai designed the series as a searing critique of Japanese societal norms, utilizing a gritty, raw artistic style that emphasizes the visceral emotional states of his characters rather than polished aesthetic appeal.

The series emerged from Arai's long-standing interest in the tension between individual integrity and institutional power. It is widely noted for its uncompromising tone and its refusal to shy away from uncomfortable socio-political themes, which garnered it a reputation as a cult classic among seinen readers. While it challenged mainstream sensibilities, the series received critical acclaim for its narrative boldness, ultimately leading to a sequel series, Kiichi VS, which continued to explore the protagonist's development as he transitioned into adulthood.
