Where it came from
Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau, known in English as Children of the Whales, began serialization in Akita Shoten's Mystery Bonita magazine in 2013. Created by mangaka Abi Umeda, the series is set on a massive, drifting island ship called the Mud Whale, which navigates a vast sea of sand. Umeda intended to craft a melancholic, high-fantasy narrative that explores the isolation of its inhabitants, who are divided between those capable of using a psychic power called thymia and those who lack it.
The series is celebrated for its distinctive, ethereal art style, characterized by delicate linework and a dreamlike atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the often somber themes of displacement and mortality. Upon its release, the manga was well-received for its unique world-building and philosophical depth. Its success led to a 2017 anime adaptation by J.C.Staff, which helped introduce Umeda's intricate visual vision to a broader international audience.
