Where it came from
Kujira no Souretsu, or The Whale's Funeral, is a seinen manga written and illustrated by YAGI Naoki. Serialized in the mid-2010s, the work emerged as a haunting entry in the psychological drama genre. The narrative explores themes of grief and memory through the lens of a surreal, atmospheric setting, distinguishing itself from mainstream action titles through its deliberate pacing and contemplative tone.
YAGI Naoki's artistic direction for this volume emphasizes stark, evocative imagery that underscores the melancholy inherent in the story. Critics and readers noted the work for its visual storytelling, which relies on heavy shading and unconventional panel layouts to convey the characters' internal struggles. It is widely regarded by enthusiasts of niche manga as a poignant example of experimental graphic narrative.
