Where it came from
Kung-Fu Girl Juline, known in Japan as Kung-Fu Girl Jūrin, was created by mangaka Narumi Kakinouchi and serialized in the magazine Nakayoshi starting in 1990. Following her successful work on Vampire Princess Miyu, Kakinouchi shifted her focus toward the magical girl genre, blending traditional martial arts themes with supernatural elements to capture the interest of the shōjo demographic during a period of evolving archetypes in Japanese comics.
The series focuses on the titular character, Juline, a young girl who discovers her destiny as a martial arts protector against mystical threats. Kakinouchi’s distinctively sharp, elegant art style—characterized by slender figures and flowing lines—distinguished the series from the more rounded, cutesy aesthetic prevalent in competing magazines at the time. While it remains a niche entry in the author's broader bibliography, it is often cited for its influence on the aesthetic development of the 1990s magical girl genre.
