Kung-Fu Panda

The Kung-Fu Panda manga adaptation, illustrated by Ookuma Hanten, was released in the late 2000s to coincide with the global theatrical debut of the DreamWorks animated feature. Published in Japan within the pages of Kerokero Ace, the series served as a promotional companion piece designed to introduce the franchise to a younger manga-reading demographic. By adapting the origin story of Po the panda, the publication sought to translate the film’s dynamic martial arts choreography into the static, high-energy panels characteristic of shonen manga.

Ookuma Hanten’s approach focused on capturing the comedic essence of the protagonist while adhering to the visual language of the source film. The design choices emphasize fluid character expressions and exaggerated action sequences typical of the period's tie-in media. While the adaptation was received primarily as a niche supplement for fans of the animation, it stands as a testament to the international cross-media marketing strategy employed by major film studios during that era to bridge the gap between Western animation and Japanese comic culture.
