Where it came from
Kyousogiga originated as a collaborative multimedia project produced by Toei Animation in 2011. Initially launched as a short-form web series directed by Rie Matsumoto, the project aimed to push the boundaries of visual storytelling through a chaotic, surreal lens. Todo Izumi, the collective pseudonym for Toei's creative staff, is credited as the author for the subsequent manga adaptation and expanded narrative, which was developed to further explore the intricate lore of the Looking-Glass City.
The design of the series is celebrated for its frenetic, high-contrast aesthetic and deep thematic focus on family and belonging. Drawing inspiration from Japanese mythology and avant-garde animation techniques, the visual direction aimed to blend traditional folklore with modern, fast-paced action. Upon its television series release in 2013, it garnered a devoted cult following, praised by critics for its emotional resonance and artistic ambition despite its complex and unconventional narrative structure.
