L'Art décoratif (Paris)

L'Art décoratif was a seminal French art periodical established at the turn of the 20th century, serving as a critical platform for the Art Nouveau movement and the transition toward Art Deco. Founded in 1898, the publication was dedicated to elevating the status of applied arts, furniture design, and interior decoration, positioning these disciplines as equal to the fine arts. Its pages served as a manifesto for the aesthetic reform that sought to replace historical eclecticism with a more organic, modern, and harmonious visual language.

The journal benefited from the contributions of leading artists, architects, and theorists of the era, who used the medium to document the rapid evolution of taste in Belle Époque Paris. Through high-quality illustrations and scholarly essays, the editors advocated for the total work of art, or Gesamtkunstwerk, emphasizing craftsmanship and the synthesis of form and function. It remains a primary historical resource for understanding the intellectual shift toward modernity and the stylistic innovations that defined early twentieth-century decorative arts.
