Last Exile - Sunadokei no Tabibito

Last Exile: Sunadokei no Tabibito, which translates to The Traveler of the Hourglass, is a manga adaptation released in the wake of the acclaimed 2003 steampunk anime series Last Exile by studio Gonzo. The series was designed to expand upon the rich, high-altitude world of the original anime, focusing on the intricate mechanics and the melancholic, adventure-driven aesthetic that defined the franchise's identity. It was produced to capitalize on the sustained interest in the aerial combat and political intrigue that made the television series a standout in the early 2000s anime landscape.

The visual direction of this volume reflects the distinct design philosophy established by Range Murata, whose work on the original anime defined its hallmark blend of retro-futuristic technology and character-focused storytelling. The manga aims to translate the sweeping, cinematic scale of the aerial vessels into a static, printed medium, emphasizing the tactile nature of the world. Upon its release, it was received by fans primarily as a complementary piece of world-building, valued for its ability to offer deeper glimpses into the setting's lore while maintaining the visual fidelity fans expected from the property.
