Leaves of Grass: Including Sands at Seventy ... Ist Annex, Good-Bye My Fancy : 2d Annex, A Backward Glance O'er Travel'd Roads, and Portrait from Life

This specific edition, often referred to as the 'Deathbed Edition,' represents the final authorized collection of Walt Whitman's magnum opus. Published in 1891–1892, Whitman meticulously organized this volume to serve as his definitive literary legacy, ensuring his life's work was bound together just as his health began to fail. It stands as the culmination of decades of radical revision, gathering earlier iterations of Leaves of Grass alongside his final poetic annexes and his reflective autobiographical essay, A Backward Glance O'er Travel'd Roads.

The design of this edition reflects Whitman's desire for a humble, accessible final statement. By including the 'Portrait from Life' and organizing the contents to map his own evolution as a poet, he sought to frame his work as an intimate dialogue with the reader. Upon its release, it was received as a monumental act of literary closure, cementing his status as a central figure in American letters and providing a structured, complete roadmap of the project that defined his entire professional life.
