Library of St. Francis de Sales, IV: Letters to Persons in Religion

The Library of St. Francis de Sales series was initiated to make the accessible, devotional wisdom of the 17th-century Bishop of Geneva available to English-speaking readers. This fourth volume, Letters to Persons in Religion, focuses on the Saint’s extensive correspondence with nuns, monks, and those under religious vows. The texts were curated to showcase his gentle approach to spiritual direction, characterized by a pragmatic and patient temperament that avoided the harsh asceticism prevalent in some currents of his era.

The design of these volumes reflects a traditional, scholarly aesthetic intended to function as foundational resources for contemplative study. The translation and editorial framework were designed to preserve the nuance of Francis de Sales’s original French, which was renowned for its literary elegance and empathetic tone. Historically, the publication of these letters has been well-received by those seeking practical guidance on living a holy life within the constraints and community of religious orders.
