Little Women

Little Women was written by Louisa May Alcott and first published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869. Commissioned by her publisher, Thomas Niles, to write a book for girls, Alcott drew heavily upon her own upbringing in Concord, Massachusetts, alongside her three sisters. The novel's grounding in domestic realism and the earnest personal development of the March sisters marked a departure from the didactic moral tales that dominated children's literature at the time, quickly establishing it as a cornerstone of American letters.

The original illustrations for the first edition were created by May Alcott, the author's sister and the inspiration for the character of Amy. Her sketches sought to capture the quintessential atmosphere of the March household, emphasizing the warmth of familial bonds. Upon its release, the book received immediate critical and commercial success, praised for its sincerity and the relatable, flawed humanity of its protagonists, which resonated deeply with readers and solidified its enduring legacy in the literary canon.
